Day 709: Camera Day

Camera Day is best celebrated with pictures. Pictures are invaluable memories of our lives and of the world. They tell stories. Our memories and stories are captured by a camera. With digital technology, using a camera has never been easier. Cameras are now built into cell phones, so you always have a camera with you, ready to record the moments of your life.

To many people, a camera is a vital tool to record important events in the family and in the world.  It captures the moment.....forever. It creates the memories that we share and look back upon. From the birth of a baby, to high school graduations, people take pictures at a fast click. Year after year, the camera records family vacations, holidays and Christmas. The camera takes pictures of good times, and occasionally bad time.

George Eastman is the "Father of Photography". He didn't invent photography. He made many photographic inventions, and created the mass production that brought cameras into everyday use by millions, if not billions of people. His most famous slogan "You take the picture, we do the rest."

Celebrate Camera Day today in a memorable way!  Take a picture of yourself/family/dog/whatever and send it to me, schutzhappens@gmail.com.  I’m going to make a photo collage and post it during SchutzHappens first ever ‘Reader’s Appreciation Week’… coming September, 2010!!!

Day 707: Sunglasses Day

Smoke tinted glasses were invented before 1430 in China. But, they weren't for sun protection. Judges wore them in court so nobody could see their eyes and guess their opinion before a verdict was declared. Sunglasses as we know them today are a 20th century phenomenon. In the 1930s, the military commissioned glasses that would protect pilots from sun glare. But, they didn't become a real fad until the 1960s when an ad campaign said... "Who's Behind those Foster Grants?".
Happy Sunglasses Day everyone!  Where them proudly!

See?  Even Grayson is gettin' his 'Sunglasses Day' groove on!

Day 705: Vidimo se kasnije!

Wow.  I can’t believe it’s time to go.  Today officially marks the end of my time in Belgrade… and it’s incredibly hard to believe.  For those of you who have never been, Belgrade is worth looking into.  Seriously.  It’s a great town, full of great people and I enjoyed my time here immensely.  Oh sure, I’ll be back.  I’ll be back over the holidays to give Serena and my boys some love… but as for work?  I can stick a fork in it.

Vidimo se kasnije! (See you later!)

So, what does tomorrow bring?  The beach with Serena and the boys!  And I can’t wait!

Day 702: Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long-Blog

Speaking of a really great web-series.  Oddly enough, this also Star’s Felicia Day (From ‘The Guild’), as well as, Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), and it’s written by Joss Whedon (Creator of ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and ‘FireFly’)

Day 700: Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day to me!  Unfortunately, I will be spending father’s day alone this year.  My boys left for the States three days ago.  And since I packed out two days ago I can’t even grill! That’s right, I’m taking the might Weber of doom to Islama-Good.

But, I do want to take a moment and acknowledge how lucky I am to be the father of two such wonderful boys.  Fatherhood is truly a humbling endeavor and I am certainly not perfect.  I am honored to have a day each year to celebrate my efforts as a father… even if I have to go it alone this year.

I miss you guys!  I will see you next week!

Happy Father’s Day everyone!

Day 699: World Juggler’s Day

I have to say, I LOVE jugglers.  It takes the athletic skill and dexterity combined the graceful fluidity of dance and theatre.  Love it!

When I was in middle school I taught myself to juggle… this is around the time I wanted to attend the Ringing Bros Clown College… seriously, it’s a real place!  Anyway, these days I can juggle three items, the Diablo (the giant yo-yo) and the devil sticks…

To celebrate World Juggling Day I chose Chris Bliss’s Three Ball Beatles routing to show off the finesse of juggling, even when it seems so simple on the surface. My point?  You don’t have to juggle bowling balls, fire, chain saws… or eat apples to be spectacular.

Day 697: Gilliam’s ‘Home’ Coming

Today at around 5pm, Eastern Standard Time, Schutz family history will be made.  Gilliam will enter the United States for the FIRST TIME… EVER.  He’s five month old… and the country of his citizenship will actually be the 10th country he’s “stepped foot” in:  United Kingdom, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Spain, Portugal, Germany… and finally… the good old, USA.   Gilliam is a classic Foreign Service brat.

WELCOME ‘HOME’ GILLIAM!

Day 692: Tom, Dick and Penny

In the summer of 1999, I attended the New York Film Academy for two months.  ‘Tom, Dick, and Penny’ was the final result of my time there.  It might not seem like much on the surface, but the nuts and bolts behind the project makes me wonder how I ever finished it.

First, it’s shot on 16mm B&W film.  I edited it by hand, and when I say ‘by hand’ I really mean it.  I had to physically cut the film into pieces and then tape it back together… by hand.
Second, I didn’t have a way to capture audio on location, so chose to forgo dialogue and focus on telling a story with only actions, props, and music… I know… it’s my bizarre-o-blog world.
Third, I had two mishaps, one during film processing… the other during filming (however, it didn’t show itself until post production.  I believe I shot around 10 rolls of film… which isn’t a lot for a film this length.  I went in knowing exactly what I wanted to shoot and I did… unfortunately, I didn’t have the time or money to shoot extra for insurance sake.

MISHAP #1: When I got my film back from processing and viewed it… I noticed one roll had been processed backwards… meaning it was the mirror image of what I actually shot.  I couldn’t use the scenes captured on that roll, because everyone was facing the wrong directions.  From an audience perspective there was no continuity and it was very disorienting.

MISHAP #2: I originally intended the film to contain a five minute fight scene.  Not to toot my own horn, but the fight sequence was pretty hilarious.  And when I edited it together it really worked… however, I had to omit it from my final project.  At some point during the filming a small piece of film broke off and wedged itself between the lenses and the gate.  The result was a rectangular dark splotch in the upper right hand corner of two rolls of film.  The two rolls containing the fight footage.  Even though the fight seen worked, I couldn’t bring myself to use flawed film… and I didn’t have time to reshoot.

As a result, I was forced to skip the fight entirely… although it is clear when the fight sequence should take place, its omission doesn’t at all detract from the overall theme of the film.

However, its omission does cause a few unanswered questions in the film… most notably, “why is the businessman putting his socks back on in the final scene?”

Wouldn’t you like to know!

PS: You can thank this film for paving the way for the monthly family videos... but thank God for digital media.

Day 689: Okay Go!

Okay Go! is one of the most creative Rock Bands out today.  They offer good music and their videos are interesting, entertaining, and simply shot.  This is a grassroots band at its best.

This one is their simplest video and it’s really good.  Again, I can’t embed the video, so follow the link:

Day 688: My Humps

Okay, I can’t stand ‘My Humps’ by the Black Eyed Peas… but after seeing Alanis Morrissette’s spoof the song and video, I LOVE it!  Even Serena thinks it’s one of the most hilarious things she’s seen.  The quick rundown is this: When ‘My Humps’ hit #1 on the Billboard Music Charts, Alanis Morissette was appalled.  She questioned how a song with such horrible lyrics objectifying women could reach #1.  So, she stripped down the song and sang it her way… please note, she sings the original lyrics 100% correct… the result is nothing less than brilliant!
I embedded the original Black Eyed Peas video just to give you the flavor.  Seeing the original makes the spoof even better!

Day 684: National Doughnut Day

Most of the holidays I’ve profiled on this site have very little documentation.  Who knows if the Holiday even exists?  But that is half the fun, right?
However, today I have the great pleasure of presenting a little known American Holiday with a noble tradition: National Doughnut Day
Wikipedia:
National Doughnut Day started in 1938[1] as a fund raiser for the Chicago Salvation Army. Their goal was to help the needy during the Great Depression, and to honor the Salvation Army "Lassies" of World War I, who served doughnuts to soldiers.
Soon after the US entrance into World War I in 1917, the Salvation Army sent a fact-finding mission to France. The mission concluded that "huts" that could serve baked goods, provide writing supplies and stamps, and provide a clothes-mending service, would serve the needs of US enlisted men. Six staff members per hut should include four female volunteers who could "mother" the boys.
(The canteens/social centres that were established by the Salvation Army in the United States near army training centers were called "huts".)
About 250 Salvation Army volunteers went to France. Because of the difficulties of providing freshly-baked goods from huts established in abandoned buildings near to the front lines, two Salvation Army volunteers (Ensign Margaret Sheldon and Adjutant Helen Purviance) came up with the idea of providing doughnuts. These are reported to have been an "instant hit", and "soon many soldiers were visiting Salvation Army huts". Margaret Sheldon wrote of one busy day "Today I made 22 pies, 300 doughnuts, 700 cups of coffee."
A legend has spread that the provision of doughnuts to US enlisted men in World War I is the origin of the term doughboy to describe US infantry, but the term was in use as early as the Mexican-American War of 1846-47.
NOTE: Last year Krispy Kream AND Dunkin’ Donuts participated by giving away free doughnuts!!!! You can thank me later!

Day 681: Flip a Coin Day

Heads or Tails? It was Julius Caesar who started the practice of flipping a coin to make decisions. His own head was on one side of every Roman coin, so "heads" determined the winner in each flip. People thought "heads" meant that Caesar agreed with the decision. The coin flip was used in serious litigation involving property, marriage and even criminal guilt. Just think how many lawyers would be out of a job if we went back to this method today!

To celebrate, I propose we all use a coin to decide all of our decisions today!  Or at least one… leave a comment and share what you used the coin for!
