Day 1043: End of the Middle Ages Day
May 29, 1453 is considered by many historians to be the end of the Middle Ages, (and therefore the Beginning of the Renaissance), and because of this, some people decided it would be good to celebrate the End of the Middle Ages, and some even call it a good day to give gifts.
On this day the city of Constantinople fell to the Ottoman Empire after being under siege for almost two months. So, why is this specific turning point significant? Because of the fall of Constantinople, the Byzantine (Greek) scholars migrated away from Constantinople which had been their political center. This scattering encouraged studies of Greek culture outside of theByzantine Empire and began a revival of learning based on classical Greek sources, which began the Renaissance.
So, how do we celebrate the end of the Middle Ages? Well, one of my favorite ways to celebrate is with food. I found quite a few recipes here, and here, and here. I would probably try to think of more ways to celebrate, but my lunch break is over, so I should get back to work in the next few minutes.
So, in which ever way you celebrate, even if you just read a bit about the Fall of Constantinople, have a wonderful End of the Middle Ages Day.

Day 939: Our Valentine’s Day Song
St. Valentine’s Day. All the curmudgeons out there will try and tell you that St. Valentine’s Day was created by greeting card companies and chocolate retailers. But February 14th is the actual the, honest to goodness, Catholic Feast Day for St. Valentine, the patron Saint of happy marriages, love, happiness, and the plague.
Sure, the holiday has become over marketed throughout the years, but not unlike St. Patrick… when a good party is involved everyone wants to be Catholic, at least for the day. ;)
The fact is this… if you remove all the marketing BS, you are still going to be left with the Feast Day of St. Valentine; a day to reflect on a happy marriage, love, happiness… and to a lesser extent… the plague… which is all pretty much the same thing.
And for my day of happy marriage reflection, so far away, I’m going to keep it simple… yet topical.
When Serena and I first started dating she was living in Nashville, while I was living in Atlanta… roughly three and a half hours away by car. This is nothing when you think about the distance between us now… but it sets the stage for an ongoing theme in our relationship: physical distance.
All those years ago, it didn’t take us long to know that we were destine to spend our lives together and just as quickly we picked out ‘our song’. A song that best articulated the beginning and subsequent growth in our relationship… a song that we would listen to indecently on rainy days… a song that I secretly had the guitar player at our wedding play as we walked back up the aisle as husband and wife… a song that could have been construed as being a bit cheesy at the time that has somehow lasted, only to become more poignant as we pass from year to year together.
I love you honey! And I’ll see you soon!
Ladies and gentlemen… Jack Johnson:
PS: Happy birthday Dad!

Day 933: Random Act of Kindness Week
Do we real need a week to encourage us to be nice to each other? No we don’t… but isn’t it great to have one? What’s the easiest way to act in a kindly manner? Don’t think about yourself… and then the kindness will flow. Then again… I don’t have to tell you guys. My readers are the kindest group out there.
In the years I’ve written this blog I haven’t once (knock on wood) received a flaming “you’re an idiot” comment or email. I’ve also never had anyone rudely ‘correct’ on my grammar or over looked spelling mistake, (which seems to be a favorite pass time for some internet trolls).
So… thank you for your kindness. And in return, I’m going to share the ‘Random Acts of Kindness Foundation’ website. These guys have cornered the market on making the world a nicer place in the simplest ways possible:

Day 871: Bodhi Day
Today is Bodhi Day, the Buddhist days of reflection commemorating Siddhartha Gautauma’s enlightenment, at which time he became known as Buddha.
I had a hard time finding a video providing more details… this is the best I could find:

Day 854: World Hello Day
Hello! Hello to everyone on ‘World Hello Day’!
So, what’s the objective today? Well, simple say ‘hello’ to ten people you don’t know in an effort to promote communication rather than force in settling a conflict.
Sounds easy enough… give it a try!
I would also like to send out s big hello to all my Sikh friends as they celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak Dev!
Take care everyone! And say ‘hello’ for me, will ya?
